Costa del Sol Towns
Coin is situated in the Guadalhorce
Valley; about 33 km west of Malaga, Marbella
is 30km away.
The township has an area of 127 km ² and is bordered by Monda, Guaro, Alozaina,
Alhaurin el Grande, Mijas, and Ojen. According to the census of 2008, it has a
population of 21,488 inhabitants, that's a density of 169.17 inhabitants per km
²
The origin of the name 'Coin' is an unresolved issue, it may
well result from a gradual reduction of a theory made by the scholar Virgilio
Martinez, related to his knowledge of the existence of the Berber family, whose
lineage dates back to Cordoba
during the ninth century.
This theory is plausible, although not
certified. Some past writings suggest that many different names have been given
to this locality at various times in its history, including Diganse, Succubo, Lacibis, Alizcuan and Al-Cohine
Coin, at the heart of
the Valley 'del Guadalhorce' is a strategic point in the province
of Malaga, as it is the same distance
from the Costa del Sol, as it is from
Antequera, the capital and the Serrania de Ronda equally.
Due to immigration and a rising birth rate in the region, the Coin population
has increased significantly, having 17,900 inhabitants in 1991, and 20,551 in
2006.
