Ojen

Ojen is a town belonging to the Andalusian province of Malaga. Mijas is adjacent to the east of Ojen, Marbella to the south, Istan Monda to the west, and Coin to the north. Within the borough of the nucleus of Ojen are the town of Ojen and the urbanization of La Mairena

Ojen is just eight km east of Marbella on the road linking the interior with Malaga. Ojen is located near the Arroyo de Almada, near very quiet and rich in waters, surrounded by the Sierra Blanca, rich in iron ore, nickel, lead, talc, and peridotites.

The Penoncillo Mine was an English-operated company that gave work to many people of Marbella and Ojen. The closeness of the sea gives Ojen a temperate climate despite being a typical mountain village.

The mountains of Ojen have a great Mediterranean forest of gall oaks, cork oaks, pines, prickly pear, and pitas reaching the edge of the road.

As for the wildlife that inhabits these forests are the beautiful ibex, which is a protected species and is virtually extinct, and the Golden Eagle. There are also genets, mongoose, Turone, and many small mammals, such as birds and insects of various species.

In addition, several plants of medicinal use are found in Ojen, including sage, rosemary, thyme, cantahueso, fennel, and chamomile. In the thicket of undergrowth there is an abundance of tojos, retamas, jaras, and abulagas.

In Almada and in other river towns like “The Charco Vineyards,” is not uncommon for turtles, frogs, or snakes to be found. Multicolored flowers like orchids abound in the Sierra de Ojen, where the night owls, an endangered bird that is very difficult to locate, can be found.
