Sierra Nevada Environmental

Since the ’80s Sierra Nevada has been placed in the eye of the hurricane by environmental groups accused of assaults on the most fragile ecosystem biodiversity that boasts a nearly equivalent in Europe.

Moreover, there are many species, both flora and fauna, that are severely threatened; insects such as the Sierra Nevada butterfly, katydids exclusive to Sierra Nevada (Baetica ustulata), and the praying mantis (Apteromantis aptera) are endemic.

Sierra Nevada Environmental Threats

The remarkable development the tourist season has caused in recent years has come to its expansion for the Barranco de San Juan to the west face of the massif, in the Cerro del Caballo.

This possibility has been rejected for now and was discarded after the declaration as a national park, although there are pressures for Grenadian political and business sectors by the enormous success of the season and the lack of space and overcrowding of the area of the station today.

Among the plant species, there are studies for the recovery of species such as yew or Manzanilla Real. Forest fires, like one that occurred in September 2005, burned about 2,500 hectares, mainly of pine reforestation, are another added risk to the long list.
