Costa del Sol Towns
This was a village that once had a strong Muslim
presence and that to this date still has traces of Arabic culture, and archaeological
remains that lie behind the importance of the municipality as a strategic
enclave, especially the towers which played an important role within the historical
framework of ancient Al-Andalus.
Easter is the most important religious
celebration, in the town during which the town becomes a small version ofJerusalem, representing
scenes from the Passion of Christ in the streets.
Carnival, having been considered the most important festival in the province,
after the capitalMalaga,
for its famous "burning of the sardine", being the only town to
celebrate this festival in the last week of February.
May Fair, which is remarkable for its fair in the old town ofAlhaurin and is visited by people from across
the province, being the most important in the Valle del Guadalhorce.



Other festivals are the highlight of the year
include Cross Day (May 1-3), the role of Jesus (the eighth of Corpus Christi),
the feast of the Patroness, Our Lady of Grace (August 15), the Villafranco fair
(early July) and the pilgrimage of Christ's agony (second week of September).
Our Lady of Grace as well as being patron of the municipality, you can also
enjoy the true local cuisine at the many restaurants around the town.
Notable for its musical culture, with five
bands, three choirs, and his dedication to sport, being a key and highlighting
the Andalusian city sports Fijones Miguel football ground, which was the first
inSpain and seventh inEurope with artificial turf, approved by FIFA and is where
the Sports Club Alhaurin play their matches.
The town has a great tradition of basketball with the local team (Alhaurín el
Grande CB) in Division 1 of the National Basketball and a local summer league.
Gerald Brenan foundation based in Alhaurín el Grande, is dedicated to the study
of the English writer, who spent the last years of his life in this town,
bequeathing all his works to the municipality Alhaurin.
In the village there are many celebrities who live or spend
the winter there.
