Axarquia

Its capital and largest city is Velez-Malaga andresidents of this region are called Axarquicos. The Axarquia is limited on the north by the Shire of Alhama, and to the east bythe Costa Tropical region. It is met in the south by the Mediterranean Sea, and in the west and northwest by Malaga Andalusia and thecounties of Nororma Antequeran respectively. The Royal Academy in its spellingof the Spanish Language in the 1999 dictionary edition, explains: “In the MiddleAges, was also x palatal fricative phoneme of deaf dixo that by the sixteenthcentury to evolve to ensure fricative phoneme Deaf said.” Some remnants of this script interpretationare present in names such as Mexico, Oaxaca, Texasand its derivatives (Mexican, Oaxacan, Texas…), and some surnames as Ximenez or Mexia. The pronunciation of ‘x’ in such andother words, ensures the fricative is deaf, that is, it sounds like ‘j’;therefore constitutes an error orthologous in articulates as ‘ks’

Axarquia (pronounced La Ajarquia or by mistake,The Asharquia) is a county located in the easternmost part of the province of Malaga sharing a border with the province of Granada. The region stretches along the coast; therefore both the interior and coastalmunicipalities are of the Costa del Sol Oriental.

As far as regional media trends show, the mostpopular, according to the EGM, are Axarquia 24 Television, Cadena and Energyradio stations, and The Forward weekly newspaper. Other media competitors areTV VTV-Axarquia, the newspaper La Axarquia, and the new independent medium -Torre del Mar TV.

The Dictionary of theSpanish Royal Academy defines the word‘jarquia’ as “a district or territory situated east of a great city anddependent on it,” and was originally pronounced ‘sarqiyya’ coming from theArabic, meaning east. In theprovinceofMalaga is this region called LaAjarquia, with its Arabic name meaning the mountains ofMalaga, to the north and east of the capital. In many texts the name is written ‘The Axarquia’, with an ‘x’, which is alsocorrect, but can mislead the reader to give the ‘ks’ sound and the name is thenerroneously and incorrectly pronounced ‘Aksarquia’.

Malaga has always been pronounced “Asharquia”(IPA: [ɑʃɑrk'ɪɑ]). Peak La Maroma is the highest point of the region, crossing the rivers Velez,Torrox, Algarrobo, Iznate Seco, Huit, Higueron, Chillar, Almachar, de la Cueva,Benamargosa, Sabar, Alcaucin, Bermuza, Rubite, Maro, all situated in the AndalusianMediterranean Basin. Water is provided via the Vinuela reservoir and thenatural park of Sierra Tejeda, Alhama and Amijara and theParaje Natural de Maro cliffs are also located in this region.

TownsThe Diputacion de Malaga, gives the region the name “Axarquia – Costa del Sol” and this is because it covers exactlythe same municipalities within the county displaying the same definition andcohesion among its peoples, who have since long ago, shared a common cultureand customs. The Axarquia comprises 31 municipalities in total.

History The region was conquered after the battles of Axarquia in 1487, defeating theZalia castles (near Zafarraya and Alcaucin, Bentomiz in Arenas and La Fortalezade Velez).

The Axarco The original currency is an Axarco. Antonio Gamez created the currency in 1988with the intention of providing cohesion and unity between all the regions. Itis still accepted in some of them, although it has fallen into disuse over time. Most of the copies of notes and coins have fallen into the hands of collectors, and are moving out of circulation. A spokesman for GIPMTM (Grupo Independiente Pro-Municipality of Torre del Mar),Manuel Rincon, proposed in June 2007, establishing a “Board ofAxarco” in the municipality of Velez-Malaga, to be responsible for thereturn of the axarco to promote tourism in the region.

The vocationof this book was to ensure that it was in Lagoswith the lucky Cyclopean task of “saving the historic wreck that was”to ensure the Municipal Archives. In their hands is the care and custody ofdocumentation. Historical researchers, are the authors of The Purification,Marquesado Beniel and Mayorazgo, winner of the Velez-Malaga (HistoricalResearch Prize, 1994) and La Taha de Frigiliana.

His articles have given him a reputation outside ourborders, especially “Arias de Enriquez: a character of Goya”, whichgives the correct date in the table wrongly dated. It also has other works inpartnership such as “Algarrobo History: Ancient and Medieval.” In hislatest publication, “The Axarquia, Land of Sugar” (Asukaria Mediterranean,2000) we learn about the important tradition of cultivating sugarcane in theregion, demonstrating that the sugar, Our Lady of Mount Caramel, was the firstindustrial sugar factory ever built in Spain. It is “Ajarquica ofHonor” (Riogordo 96).
