Los Pepones, Attractions

The Hermitage

There is an old and small church where we can find the imageof the Immaculate Virgin. Although it’s currently not in use, it was a place ofceremonies for all the residents, as well as a rural school.

Many of those still living in Los Pepones learned the basicsof elementary education as reading and writing in this school.

Festivities

Par excellence is the feast day of Our Lady of Victory, which is celebrated on September 8. That day the fires are typical of that timeand and people dance “the wheel.” But the patron is the Virgin of theImmaculate. The most important is the Festival in May.

NeighborhoodAssociation the “Shrine of Pepones” Letter to Romero

Dear Friends in the Chapel of Los Pepones:

Last year we held the first Festival of our Patron the“Immaculate of Pepones.” Few facts of life and human behavior have muchcapacity for our religious and festive events.

This first edition was a success, and neighbors and friendsof Pepones were filled with joy and spirituality based on our pilgrimage, onthe maternal image of Our Lady of Los Pepones, and what it means to everyone.

This year we are launching a new edition, and if last yearwas accompanied by Rocieros Benamocarra brothers, on this occasion we will allgo to the neighbors of Pepones, but in Coto Benamocarra and Velez-Malaga, whichare parts of the municipality Los Pepones and those of Almachar Benamocarra, asthat many of these municipalities are the inhabitants of Los Pepones.

Our pilgrimage is rooted in the ability and religiousholiday that always celebrated Los Pepones with various social conditions whileliving here in a triangle of towns, Velez-Malaga, Benamocarra Almachar, andsome neighbors who always found a channel through components for devotional andpublic holidays, religious celebrations of all types, masses, processions, andparties as the “Chumbo,” the “Candles,” cultural, poetry, and painting—all thingswe want to make that clear and with a mass participation in our pilgrimage.

What is intended by the Pilgrimage? So, firstly we want tomake clear the only possible answer: The Pilgrimage of the Virgin.

The Pilgrimage, a brotherhood of all the neighbors, thedesire to join in this event with friends from Velez-Malaga and fromBenamocarra Almachar…and only an explanation and the sense in sharing thisunique Virgin “Los Pepones,” which was Almachar, shared with neighbors andBenamocarra Velez in “Los Pepones,” which summarizes the deeper meanings of theMarian devotion of our land.

It’s true that, as in any religion, she is the only link inthe most magnificent moments of joy, deep joy, shock, sadness, or doubt and iscapable of delivering to the limit of the divine, flooding hearts as deepspiritual feelings.

This joy is from the path that begins even before, from thepreparations on Saturday, June 16, then we will live on Sunday, June 17, momentby moment, every milestone. Joy that can be transformed into song and dance, inverse, and in human contact.

Everything else… That if there is a crown… Of course thereis! There will be fun and laughter, as there will be tears and emotions that,at times, will have nothing to do with the environment of Romero.

Poetry

Los Pepones open art competition is held every year.

Tradition tells of a series of Poets Peponeseros likeAurelio Santana (deceased in 2000) and his son Antonio Beltran Santana, aka“The Maestrillo.”

Some verses of First Prize (some 2005 verses): As if a faceout, not because I have been outside the gates of the olive color and the ivythat attempts to survive the hot sun burning.

When I look in your eyes, I can see the mountains are behindme: brave, strong, black, and gray…but I see that almond, with its trunk andblackish flowers, seems like a false pearl necklace.

And the tree’s branches wreaths new love to kiss the soil ofwhich drew its strength. And the olive green and gray, no one praised hisgreat, generous fruit that would become gold. And now the land…red blood veinopen, he is dull and gray, barren as a stone, beyond, the color of the nightcovered with weeds.

Southern Nostalgia: Although they never drank from thewaters of oblivion, which is far south, my people, Parnassus-blue-child, ofthis land of cactus and concrete and rush habit, are so close to death already.

From time I met you, my people, working the soil, coveredwith sweat on your face your back, and were put on your laurels when nobodygave a sip of wine or put the bottle to your lips or mouth.

Not a poem about your body being shaken or fatigue on theanvil of the jagged trails were rolling in, pounding the pile of the wheat orthe handle of the hoe cuts with the hook of bondage andcourage bore sore handsor buried dreams.

When the crop hails nothing but land, a tough home wideopen, as busted by the sun, some arms, an auction price, and to build thecomfort of the fig tree on the soft cushion of grass, while keeping the airrippled with whispers of a song by peteneras.

In the header, muddy jug is expected.

Those letters, which were those stories…

“I am pleased that this being in your power, you are inperfect condition. Well, I thank God. It will be my greatest joy, to have yoursister and brother, who on receipt of my health, will enjoy this day with ourmother’s side.”

“And so I have to tell as Antonio wants to have aband—blessed is the youth! You know, with the son of Henry Ennovia theAmapolita. I must also tell you the wind has become irresistible. With nothingfor now, because it is all ready to post memories of children hugs, kisses andothers.
