Monda

Monda is situated in the province of Malaga, in the region of the Sierra de las Nieves. Located at 427 meters, the township has an area of 58km2 and a population of 2,342 inhabitants. The discovery of Neolithic axes in the fields near the town, the existence of a Roman bridge over Arroyo de La Teja, a Roman road in the area and the presence in the cement foundation of the castle of the type used by Roman builders, all suggest that Monda has been since ancient times, a place of settlement of successive civilizations.

Some historians place here the famous Battle of Munda between Julius Caesar and the Pompey brothers. What seems certain is that the entry of Muslims to the Peninsula, the land now forming the county, were integrated into the defense system of the Guadalhorce Valley, by building his castle.

After the reconquest of the Christian troops in Malaga, Monda within its jurisdiction appointed mayor D. Bartholomew Sepulveda, respecting the property of Muslims in these lands, as Mudejar. This coexistence was maintained until after the Moorish rebellion.
