Olvera, Animals & Plants

The animals are typical of a Mediterraneanecosystem and there are more than 100 species of birds of prey, such as goldeneagles, road or toed, goshawks, sparrow hawks, falcons, buzzards, and kestrels,without including game birds such as red, wood and wild pigeon, or thrush,relentless winter visitors.

Olvera is especially known in wildlife for itsnoteworthy griffon vultures that inhabit the rock Zaframagon, A particularfeature of the vultures is their bare head, devoid of feathers. This is surelyto be a head with feathers, blood, and other fluids during feeding, and itwould be difficult to keep clean because they feed on dead animals.

Rock of Zaframagon

It should be noted that within the municipality are locatedthe largest nesting griffon vultures in Andalusia and one of the most importantin Europe within the natural reserve of Rock of Zaframagon, a club located inthe northwest of the town.

The route of thisroad is characterized by a Mediterranean forest and vegetation, the flow ofGuadalete, and junction with other channels, while the griffon vultures flyover the Rock of Zaframagon or agricultural landscapes and mountains.

Its vegetation characteristic is sclerophyllous (hardfoliage), i.e. plants with small and hard leaves, capable of preventing waterloss through transpiration during periods of prolonged water deficit.

Plants

Despite the presence of man since ancient times, Olveraretains a large mass of natural vegetation: oaks, cork oaks, gall oaks, carobtrees, olive trees, elms, willows, poplars, and riparian forests.

There is a total of 90 species, not forgetting our typicalolive trees that currently provide jobs for more than 85% of the workforce inthe primary sector. There are a number of wildflowers such as poppies,jaramagos in the fields of Olvera.

Olvera is found mainly in two large, green areas, thegreenway and the Rock of Zaframagon.

Among the most significant plant species found in oak, thetree most characteristic, perhaps, of the Mediterranean climate, the oaks arecenturies old, resulting in the close relationship that has always existedbetween man and the mountain and the dependence between the two.

It is also very characteristic of the Mediterraneanlandscapes of Algarrobo, which are well-known and appreciated by the Arabs, whoused the seeds of the carob (keratin) to measure the carat.

Also the oak, especially those decorated with the guts, are formations that developed in the hypertrophic buds and sheltering insidethe larva of a fly. Vegetation along the rivers emphasizes the importance oftares in the lower regions of the river and are important for the animalcommunity of the woods and river.

We may see some of the raptors that, while living inZaframagon, often drift to other places that are not their territory. This istrue of the vulture and eagle perdicera.
