The site took place around the hermitage
of San Roque, situated on the summit of a mountain (hill) of 108 meters. Here most of the fugitives had taken refuge
and settled in what is now Los Barrios and Algeciras, but it was the city San
Roque that received the honors, titles and stamps of the lost city of Gibraltar
and hence is named "Most Noble and Most Loyal City of San Roque in
Gibraltar".
In 1870, the current municipality of La Linea
de la Concepcion San Roque was secreted, creating their own town hall on 20th
July that year. Today there is a
large municipality with a significant industrial bases which include a
refinery, a petrochemical complex and several combined cycle plants.
The Hermitage of San Roque has moved from its original
place to the complex situation Diego Salinas (former military barracks, now a
municipal building). At the top of the hill, the original chapel has been
remodelled to become the Church
of St. Mary the Crowned.
The city of San Roque
