Torrox Climate & Weather

Within the general atmospheric circulation of the Azores anticyclone is the main center of action that affects you. Their seasonal variations flow over the Atlantic. In summer, peak intensity, brings high temperatures and little rainfall. In winter, however, being removed from the town gives way to the Atlantic storms.

The air masses from the African continental tropical and maritime tropical are issued by the Azores.  Torrox has fairly conducive mild temperatures throughout the year and low temperature variation, whereas the opposite effect, that of the continent produces high temperature ranges.

Exhibition to highlight the elements of climate: in line with the direction that presents an area, climatic elements affecting intensity. There are four guidelines based on the cardinal points: the sunny; south-facing; the shade; facing north; west facing west and the east, with east.

Another element of relief of the weather conditions are valleys that can facilitate the transition from the prevailing winds or modify the original direction of air masses. In Torrox there are two types of valleys: the interior river valleys and coastal valleys. In the first case, the Torrox river valleys and the Arroyo de Barranco Plano are both protected from north winds by the surrounding hills.

In the case of the Torrox river valley, this protection coupled with its openness towards the South enables the penetration of a maritime influence to areas well away from the coast and the maintenance of mild temperatures even in winter.

In the Axarquia in general, and in Torrox in particular, it is dominated by the sun. According to the "Study of the physical environment for urban planning” Torrox’s sunny areas correspond to the interior slopes of the hills of the Ortiz brothers, the ravit, Antonio Perez and Coscoja and coastal slopes. Meanwhile shaded areas would be located in the western half of town, especially among the hill of Meli and Cerro Gordo.

The relief: since the elements of climate are adapted to the morphology of the terrain, the terrain is a factor of great importance for the analysis of a microclimate and local climate. Altitude is the most important factor because as we ascend, the temperature decreases at a rate of 0.5°C per 100m. Just keep in mind that our area of study does not exceed 700m, which is why the differences introduced by the altitude will not be very prominent.  However, if we add altitude to sea remoteness the differences may be more significant.

The existence of mountains is another key factor influencing the climate in two ways:
As a barrier that affects the rainy front step and as a bar that prevents the passage of the winds. The first case, the set-Axarquia Malaga Mountains, located west of tm Torrox, is not an element of great importance to modify the rainfall received across our territory. The so-called foehn effect is hardly noticeable here. For the latter case, the great mountain barrier of the Sierra Tejeda and Almijara, located north of our area of study, outside it, keeps out cold winds from the north.

The proximity of the Sierra Almijara and the Mediterranean Sea, make Torrox temperatures moderate in winter and summer. The average annual temperature is 18.2°C, there is no big difference between winter and summer, reaching subtropical touches. That is why Torrox is a tourist attraction as the slogan "the best climate in Europe, certified by the company MeteoGroup, suggests.

A very important part of the municipality of Torrox enjoys a subtropical Mediterranean climate that is developed through a narrow strip of coast from the Bay of Algeciras to the first south-western municipalities of the province of Almeria. Thus, as we move further offshore, the weather gradually loses that feature of subtropicana to experience a slight decrease in temperature.

The main differences of the Torrox zonal climate is due to relief and the proximity of the sea. The northernmost point of Torrox is located 36 º 49 '00'' while the southernmost tip of Torrox, is at 36 º 43' 30''. These low latitudes are included within the area of greatest isolation of the Iberian Peninsula. Indeed Torrox has approximately 2,900 hours of sunshine a year.
